Children « da Silva Photography

I’m a thirty somethin’ mamma, photographer, activist and lover of the outdoors. I grew up in bustling Montréal, Québec, and have been on the West Coast of Canada since 2005. I live in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia (Canada) – a smallish city on Vancouver island, surrounded by awe-inspiring landscapes. I received my education and most of my professional experience in Montréal. I have been photographing professionally for over 15 years. I am inspired daily by great conversation, my daughter, friends, laughter, food, magazines, books, music, film, and the outdoors. As I grow as a mom, partner, friend and visual artist, so does my appreciation for spirituality, sustainability and well-being. Welcome to my blog!

    Raising funds for Molly Campbell

    Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

As you may have heard by now, a well-known Victoria family’s one month old daughter, Molly Campbell, was just diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia. As wee Molly starts the battle to save her life, the community is gathering to help raise funds to help this family cope with living expenses. I am participating in a silent auction that has been organized at Koffi, a neighbourhood coffee shop at 1441 Haultain street (250-298-7878). If you have been thinking of booking a photo session with me, this is your chance to do so and help a family in need. Bids are welcome from Jan 5th to Jan 16th. A community event will be held on Jan 16th from 2-4pm (auction closes at 4pm). Thank you for doing all you can to help this family in need, and please continue to spread the word.

For all out-of-towners (USA, Vancouver, Montreal…), should you wish to bid on the photo session, please note that I will honour the certificate upon my next visit! Please let me know if you wish to bid or donate and I will put you in touch with the organizer.

Molly’s parents are documenting her progress at www.molly-campbell.com, where suporters from Victoria and around the world have logged on to show their support.

    Yukari Peerless

    Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

There are some people with whom you feel an instant connection with. Yukari was one of those people for me. Although I cannot remember the first time I met her, I do remember how thrilled I was to be speaking with her! Standing quite a bit shorter than me (sorry Yukari ;) ), I couldn’t help but notice her grandeur. This woman was moving mountains! Very much involved with her community, Yukari brings people together. She is constantly creating, moving, inspiring. She is quite the twitter bug (@yukarip), runs her own business, Lucid Communication Solutions, and is involved with all things Social Media. I have had the pleasure of photographing her several time this year – even in the bare, with a monk by her side (Babes Go Bare for Cancer Calendar www.babesgobareforcancer.ca). This is Yukari’s beautiful family :)

    Photographing Children

    Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

One of the most fascinating and exciting subjects to photograph is arguably a child. Children can also be one of the most challenging little people to photograph! To really grasp them, in their element, and get more than just a smile can sometimes be a work of patience, cleverness and quick wits. The following tips will help you get those images that stop time, that bring tears to parents’ eyes, and that really tell a story.

First things first – the prep! Remember to advise the parents accordingly. Always plan for enough time; i.e. you might need 2-3 hours for very young children (nursing / snacks / breaks), and anywhere from 1 to 2 hours for older children. It is not fair to assume that a child will participate and collaborate in the same way a grown-up would. You must adapt to them, and not vice-versa. I always tell parents to make sure the kids have napped and are well fed before the session starts. Always pick a time for the session that is suited to the child’s schedule and you will avoid one of the most common pitfalls.

Proper clothing is essential! Remind parents that the children will collaborate much better if they are a) comfortable in their clothing, b) if they were given the opportunity to pick out their own outfit. This does scare some parents who might think picture time = take out the Christmas outfit. Gently assure them that the images will be much more telling and less contrived if the child feels comfortable and confident. I love a child who shows up proudly wearing a tutu!

I strongly suggest starting a session in a familiar place for the child/children; i.e. their home, a favorite beach or park, and then moving locations if desired. When you show up to the session, do not immediately start taking pictures. You will have to gain the child’s and the parents’ trust before anything truly magical happens. I usually sit and chat with the grown-ups for a few minutes and then gently start interacting with the child/children. Remember to slow everything down. I usually ask the parents to step out of the room or of immediate sight (not in back of me…) as I start interacting with the children, camera in hand. Avoid at all cost the mom or dad standing in back of your telling their child to smile and look at the camera! This is another major pitfall! Talk to the children, but most importantly, listen to them (you will inevitably come away from each session a little bit wiser if you do!). Let the magic happen!

1 – Get down to their level and you will understand their world: crouch, lie down, sit, etc. They will also feel more at ease if you are looking at them from their height.

2 – Ask them questions and get them talking or thinking. Ask them to tell you their favorite story or show you their favorite toy/rock, etc.

3 – Let them guide you through the photo session and don’t fool yourself into thinking it’s the other way around. Suggest ideas and encourage things but be flexible.

    4 – Patience, patience, patience.

5 – Have fun! I assure you, you will!

    Summer….

    Saturday, August 8th, 2009

I love where I live…. Every so often I am reminded how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful city. I wonder if Sofia realizes what a treat it is to live by the ocean, the mountains, the rainforest? This is all she knows! “Mamma, let’s go looking for crabs today!” Summer is all about spending time with my loved ones, and although this summer has been particularly hectic in our household, we have found the time to get away and enjoy each other. I love you guys!

    Breastfeeding Challenge 2009

    Thursday, July 9th, 2009

“On Saturday October 3rd countries from around the world will take part in the globally synchronized Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge. The Challenge is to record the most babies breastfeeding at one time in a geographic location (province, state, or territory) as a percentage of the birthrate. It’s a great opportunity for mothers, fathers, families and supporters to have fun and be recognized for the wonderful start they are giving to their children.” taken from the Kids in Victoria business showcase.

I was approached a few months back by the organizer of the 2009 Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge, to produce the poster image for this year’s challenge, as well as design the various promotional printed materials. I gladly jumped on the opportunity! I have been participant of the last 4 Victoria challenges, with my (not so little anymore) sweet Sofia, who at the present age of 4 and a half, is still a happily breastfed child. It goes without saying that I am a supporter of breastfeeding.

So on a crisp spring morning I captured the image of this year’s poster child, and started working on the poster design. Soon after, Island Parent jumped on board as a sponsor and offered the challenge a spread in one of this fall’s issues. We decided it would be lovely to illustrate the spread with some beautiful black and white images of moms with nursing babes. So, a couple of weeks back I posted a photo op on facebook and emailed some of my mom friends to try to get a group of willing mammas out to Crumsbys (the gorgeous new kid-friendly coffee shop in Estevan Village, Oak Bay) for a few snapshots. I had no idea how many would show up… well, the word spread, quickly! We filled up the place with moms and their children who came from all over town in support of breastfeeding. The owners of the coffee shop were amazing at accommodating our rather large gregarious group!

    Fernfest 2009

    Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

Solstice weekend – the official start to the summer! It also is the weekend when summer schedules start – parties, BBQ’s, camping, road trips and bike rides! John started his one week-long summer vacation this weekend as well which means lots of quality family time! This past weekend was Fernfest up in our old neighborhood – Fernwood. It’s an annual village style party that we make sure not to miss – year after year Sofia remembers the bouncy castle…. This year was quite a bit quieter than the previous years, probably due to the funny weather we were having all day! Nonetheless, it is always wonderful! I bumped into the village icon, Terry the bubbleman and we headed to the field to work the bubbles! These images somehow remind me of my childhood summers!
